Approach
My framework

I am a trained system counselor which means that we will approach the relationship both based on an individual exploration as well as creating a deep understanding of your environment in terms of family background, work, current relationships and important persons in your life.

Social, cultural and familial aspects are important factors to consider when creating a dynamic to work on transformation. These “systems” have a big impact on who we are as a person and it is often by exploring your role, communication and ways of living in these environments that solutions can be found. Reasons of pain or doubt can be understood and new sources of strength can be identified in order to create change at the individual level.

Some important elements of this approach are:

-
Symptoms are often a way to express an unconscious underlying issue which we can work with
-
Individual suffering or questioning can be supported by redefining your role in your environment (family, couple, work, group, …)
-
Opening the perspective of the individual issue towards a broader system view, often provides a wealth of opportunities to accept who you are and to use your authentic self to create change where needed
-
Counseling can be brief and solution-oriented depending on the formulated goals

Everything starts with trust and respect
the counseling journey
Ultimately every counseling relationship starts on a basis of trust and respect for my client and by installing a safe working relationship without judgement.

Through my education I have been heavily influenced by experts such as Michael White and Jill Freedman who have conducted important work in the field of narrative therapy (“rewriting the stories of your life”), Ivan Nagy and Salvador Minuchin wo are considered the “fathers of system therapy”. But I am also influenced by pioneers in the field of Solution-focused brief therapy such as Steve de Shazer or more philosophical approaches of intelligence and emotions as studied by Marta Nussbaum.

As we embark on a counseling journey, I will use tried and tested approaches and tools (such a genogram) to create a solid foundation for a therapy geared towards facing the problem or simply developing a stronger outlook on life. The ultimate goal will always be to see the horizon of where the counseling can end and we can mutually agree on having progressed in the journey.

Whether dealing with communication challenges, leadership development or simply the wish to better operate as a professional.
